I find that a good rule of thumb is never to go much more than 400 pixel wide.  This picture is 400 x 300

I had to get my high powered glasses out just to find the photo.  I like them 1600 x 1200 so you can see something.

Many digital cameras come with photo editing programs.  Look on the CD that came with your camera.  Or google for "photo editing program".  I'm sure you can find a free one.  With the photo program you can make photos any size and trim them also.
