Get ready, they are coming.  Chevy Volt in 2010, probably others.
They are much simpler than Hybrids; Just a battery, motor and controller.
Most will use a small gasoline engine / generator to extend the milage; but this will just charge the battery and not be connected to the wheels as in a Hybrid.
This article talks about the costs:

Hi Folks,
Back a few years ago General Motors came out with a battery operated car that was supposed to be really great. They leased some of them but didn't sell any. For some reason they recalled them and I think they destroyed them. The big thing about them was that they would go over 100 MPH. I think the oil companies didn't want them around images/icones/icon18.gif  images/icones/icon9.gif . We saw one at Epcot.

Yes Tom, that was the EV1 and it flopped. It was build in responce to the 70's gas crises.  It was fast but was heavy and had poor range.
The big difference today is gas price and battery technology.
The Lithum-Ion batterys have about three times the power per pound.
If you can limit your trips to 40 miles the Chevy Volt will get 150 miles per gallon (equivilent).
The average cost to recharge the batterys for 40 miles would be 85 cents at a US average electricity cost of 10 cents per kilowatt hour.
The more gas goes up the better this looks.
In Tennessee electricity is only 6 cents per kilowatt hour so the cost would be even lower.
Of course there is poor NY at 14 cents.

If the government was concerned they could cut the price or give us money to buy a pryius that get 50 mpg , then we would save a millions in gas useage ,, oh that won't work the gas companies allow that ,,,,,lol

Things are starting to brew in Albany over eleminating some of our gas tax for the summer. Slick Silver, one of our fearless political leaders says no-way with some of his cronies siding with him. The natives are getting anxious and a WROW radio talk show host(who has been known to help change things in the past)  is encouraging all of his callers to contack Silver and voice our opinions. The minority leader appears to want Boston Tea party type revolt. Probably the NYS govt. has already spent what they are expecting in summer tax revenue. They continue to say it is a federal tax problem. Well, howcome all other states get taxed less than NYS is what I would like to know and the officials have no ans. that make any sense.OK, now I will put my soapbox away for the night
