...put straws in doodle bug holes and recite some poem and pull the bugs out of their hole?

...pull the "light" off lightning bugs and put them on our ears for earrings?

...tie a string to a June bug's leg and then let them fly?

The ladies in the office are taking about what then did as "Southern kids"?

I remember using the lightning bug "light" as a ring - thinking back on it, that was sooooo cruel.......

Doodle bug is a Car truck thing Arne Saari had one, Ed Saari , Dennis Saari amd Harold Holmes and Myself use to drive into the woods and get field stone for the stone wall fence and build fire place at Arne's house. I remember one Dennis and I went up cut a bunch of trees down then Arne got so upset, he didn't own that section ,,,,,lol

June bugs are a strictly a Southern / Oklahoma / Texas critter and they taste absolutely awful. Caught one once in the teeth driving a good clip on a back road east of Norman while in college. Stopped at a county store for something to kill the taste and rinse out myu mouth. Unfortunately the only and I do mean the only thing they had to sell that was liquid was Canadian Ace 3.2 beer. To this day, don't know which was worse, the June bug or the Canadian Ace. (you know a beer is bad when you can't give the rest of a 6-pack away in a fraternity house

Aren't the June bugs the big green ugly things that fly right at you all the time.

Ugly, big as bugs go but around here they are a dark brown.
Chickadas also known as katydids are green - and yes the spelling is way off. Grade schoolers would tie a thread around their necks to watch them fly in circles. Getting to OK at the age I did felt that was unnecessarily crule
